Secret Mission.

Last week Friday, each student in my science class was given a 'Secret Mission'. My secret mission was to fall down and pretend I had broken my ankle, and see how quick the crowd would react. I failed. I did it in front of my family, but no one reacted. So I think next time I would work on my acting :) They just all laughed, so, yeah.

Last week Thursday we started year 10 jumpstart. Since then, I've had six periods with Mrs Well in S3. Within those six periods, I've learnt about 'Parakuihi and Hauora' ( Breakfast and Well-Being), A few science investigations, Nutrients, and other stuff. My tutor class 9RMz was picked to be part of this 'Integrated Learning Unit'. We're learning about 'Pakuihi and Hauora'. We learn it in six different classes: Health, P.E, Science, Maths, Food Tech, and Social Studies.

1080

Is 1080 saving or destroying the environment?  I think that it's not saving the environment but destroying it. If a bird was killed by this, then obviously it's destroying. It's being used as an easier way of getting rid of possum, rats, and pests. But it has killed over 300 deers. I think it is not helping the environment.

My Diary Entry - Tokelau

Before I left to University in Fiji, my grandmother passed. This made me feel like I just wanted to stay and work on the plantation. But my mother motivated me, that I should make most of the opportunities given and just go. It has been three long years since I left home, and I am proud to say that I have graduated with the Bachelor Of Nursing degree. I want to help my country in every way I can. Medically. I'm nervous and excited at the same time to see my family and homeland. I am currently on the boat with a few other students who are also returning back to Tokelau. I have heard about the different changes, good and bad, and I'm excited to see it all.

Social Studies

Today I learnt about two new Social Studies concepts.
The first concept 'Globalisation'. Which means when you own a company/business and want it to make it international. For example McDonald's. It's almost in every country in the world. It is worldwide.
The second social studies concept 'Modernisation'. It means having to up to date. Eg: instead of starting a fire to warm up some food, you could just use a microwave.

Custom Traditions - Social Studies

Image result for samoan chief
For the last few weeks in Social Studies, we've been researching: Custom / Traditional  Practices. The Tradition I researched was
'Samoan Chief (Matai)'. I chose this tradition because some of my family members have or are receiving a title this year. So I thought it'll be interesting just to research about this Tradition. I find it interesting because a family member is able to have the responsibility of the whole family, including extended. Another interesting aspect I learned from this tradition is, I never knew women were able to receive a title. Although it doesn’t occur as often anymore, it’s awesome to know they were able to. So last week I presented my presentation. I felt proud of myself for doing what I did. Although I think I could’ve improved on some eye contact and speaking more clearly and louder.

Made in Taiwan

The purpose of Oscar and Nathan’s trip to Rarotonga, Vanuatu, Taiwan, \
Mahia, and Samoa, was to find out where their ancestors came from.
Oscar is from Samoa and wanted to find out where his ancestors came from.
Whereas Nathan is from New Zealand and also wants to find out where
his ancestors came from. Before the two began their journey, they
took a DNA test. Therefore before they arrived they would’ve
received their results before getting to their destination.
Oscar read out his results with his grandmother, mother,
friend, and a few other family members. He found out that
his mother's side were from Eastern Asia, and his father South
Eurasia. His mother was delighted to hear this news, she felt this way
because she was happy to know where her ancestors came from,
as well as her mother. As for Oscar he read his results with his parents.
The results said that his mum came from America and his dad was a
descendant of Maui. When they had found this out they shared the news
with the village and were so happy. When they visited Taiwan they
found a lot of similarities the country had with Samoa and
New Zealand. So they thought that maybe Polynesia were migrated from
Asia. My thoughts on this clip, I think it’s pretty awesome to find out
where your ancestors come from. One day I hope I would
find out where my ancestors came from. So Oscar now thinks
that Polynesia were migrated from Asia.

Current Events

Today 27.02.18 I read an article on Kiwi Kids News: NZ school system in for a major change.
In this article, it’s explains the major changes that are going to occur in the NZ school system. They’re (government) looking at skills that are needed in the 21st century, such as Technology. It’s stated in this article ‘The entire education system, from pre-school to adult education, is to be completely overhauled’. Some of the main components of they’re plan they’re looking at are Reviews of NCEA, focusing on raising achievement for Maori and Pasifika, and Decisions on Communities of Online Learning. Those are just a few components that stood out to me out of many. My opinion on this article is that students should be really grateful for having an education because a lot of people try to make it possible for kids to have a bright future and a good education. I also look forward to seeing what education would look like in the future.

Theories of where Polynesians came from.

Today the two theories I will be comparing are the ‘Hawaiki’, and ‘South America’ theories. Some people believe that Polynesians were migrated from South America. A theorist named Thor H. once noticed the wind and ocean currents might’ve pushed travelers to the Pacific, instead of their destination. Some people believe this evidence is true. Although some do not. Some people believe that Polynesia was migrated from ‘Tahiti’. The reason for this is the similarities of Myths, Stories, Names, etc. I think that both theories have a lot of interesting and different evidence. This makes me want to research more about Theories on where we Polynesians came from. I support the theory of South America. Because of its evidence. I think the evidence of this theory is true. A particular evidence I believe is how sweet potato (kumara) came from South America. Also how wind and ocean currents pushed travelers to the Pacific.
